What is a Thermal Perfomance Assessment?

Is an assessment carried out by an ABSA Assessor, to determine the energy consumption of a home. This initiative aims to reduce gas emissions into our environment by using less energy to heat and cool our homes.

An assessment considers design elements such as walls, floors, windows, roof and insulation along with weather data to determine that your home is being built to withstand our climate naturally.

Regulated software packages by ABSA include NatHERS, BERS and FirstRate. These are used to calculate the rating using components of the design, climate data and occupancy settings.

ABSA Accreditation is a nationally recognised standard which meets the requirements of the Building Code of Australia and the NSW Building Sustainability Index.

Upon completion of the assessment, an ABSA Certificate along with approved stamped plans will be provided on your home. This contains the relevant Energy Compliant Components of your home.

This will be submitted with your development application to Council.

How does a thermal performance assessment correlate with BASIX?

Each development application for a residential dwelling is also required to have a BASIX Certificate. BASIX has a “thermal comfort” component and the NatHERS Assessment provides results that can satisfy the thermal comfort targets for a BASIX certificate.
